Access to specialist clinics
Barwon Health, in collaboration with Barwon South West regional health services, received funding from the Department of Health and Human Services to establish and scale up Telehealth (video) access to specialist clinics (outpatient appointments) during 2017. The project aims to improve health outcomes by increasing patient access to specialist medical care, nursing and allied health services, for regional and rural communities where access may be limited.
Telehealth access enables our patients to attend appointments without the burden of travel, and can improve patient experience through greater efficiency in the provision of care. The following challenges of implementing Telehealth access will addressed:
-
coordinating care (between health service staff and GPs, family etc.)
-
accessing interpreters
-
providing a single, consistent and easy to use access point for consumers
The project will establish models of care where the use of Telehealth is a standard access option. It will also provide education, support and resources for consumers and their local clinicians, enabling consumers to access Telehealth from home/work or with the support of local health care services.
